I got my paypal account hacked and my gmail account hacked about 6 months ago, but with different usernames and passwords. I could not for life of me figure out how they guessed it since always used strong password.

Luckily Paypal reversed the one they charged on my account, but I ended up formatting and reinstalling my windows PC for fear of some keylogger that no antivruses was able to detect.

It scary that is for sure.

I bet they used your gmail account to request the password from your paypal. Its very common.

Yeah the odd thing is my gmail account was not linked to my paypal, I use a totally different email for that.

1Password is a great application for Mac / iPhone users. It will suggest a password that is naturally strong using random letters, numbers and symbols and then store it. There is also a browser plugin to remember for you.

Lol 123456? If someone is dumb enough to use that for their passwords they deserve to have their accounts hacked and pillaged.

I use a tiered system for my passwords.

Tier 1 - password for priority 1 stuff, like my primary e-mail account, bank accounts etc...
Tier 2 - password for things that hold personal info but is not exactly top secret. Facebook, Netflix, Gamefly etc...
Tier 3 - password for websites that I don't trust or have a high chance of security breach. I also have a 2nd e-mail account that I use for these sites in case there is a password breach. That way they won't try to hack my primary e-mail account.

So with a system like that I only have to remember 3 passwords.

We all have trouble remembering our accounts at some point,so it doesnt surprise me that this has happened.People prefer easy passwords, and sometimes just too easy to remember/hack.:P
Anyway,i generate new passwords for every account i create just to be sure. Not that it can fully protect me,but still i feel safer.
