Canadian Internet Censoring a Real Possibility

If you're Canadian & you love the vast freedom of the internet, there is a petition that you might be interested in signing up for. This petition has put in place to attempt to cease a new internet related law being added in Canada. Under new Canadian C-61 legislation, internet censorship might be set up in Canada, mainly aimed at reducing the amount of illegal P2P torrent downloads. What.CD & ISO Hunt are examples of trackers hosted in Canada that could be potentially crippled by this new law. This law won't only affect the internet, as rules included in this will make it even more illegal than before to crack/hack/reverse enginner media anti piracy locks.

Anybody acting on behalf of piracy is also liable.... So torrent sites & scene members are in anti P2P's crosshairs also & risk having hefty fines & other frightning things.

So what will this mean for the Canadian P2P downloaders?

Well for starters, the whole 'freedom of the internet' thing will go down the drain. As for worry free P2P downloading? Forget about it. However, burning audio disks would still be legal & so would ripping audio disks on to your portable media player. In fact any 'private' media copying will still be allowed. Anti piracy software like DRM and anti copy flags will most probably dramaticly increase with the introduction ofthis law, making data piracy just that little more awkward to achieve.

But one thing is quite clear....
Canadians will be most affected by this.
But so will non Canadians, as a lot of exellent trackers are hosted there.

If you want to vote against this law put you name forward in the petition.

    Blame Canada!

But really, i'm surprised how long it has taken for Canada to change its laws regarding copyrights/file sharing. So it's no real surprise that is it starting to happen on a larger scale.

Yeah, this is major bad news (been brewing for a while). Minority govt may be only solution (plus getting an off-shore seedbox...)

Well I myself am canadian and have been downloading music and movies for about 8 years now! It will be disappointing to see these new laws to come in affect, but I don't think we will have much to worry about. I mean who is going to enforce the new rules..??? I mean yeah they might shut down big torrent sites here is canada but I don't think they are going to put the money into trying to find small time downloaders and that.

All ISPs in Canada will mantain a blacklist probably. I think all home user internet will have to by law use a ISP that has a blacklist certified by the goverment..

You might be able to get thorugh it if you used P2P encryption & used a tracker with a moving URL. But I think the torrent tracking connections would be banned aswell as the sites.

What.CD is a exellent tracker & I hope they somehow survive. But this probably wont happen.

I am really sorry for all the Canadians out there. I am most certainly signing a petition. You all should as well.

This is really bad news.... It's a shame that my first article has to be so depressing....

I doubt they are going to block all trackers! Did you hear that from somewhere or are you just guessing??? From what I have heard the are just enforcing the laws "Possibly"
