    For example. A music listener downloads an album to hear one. If the pirate loves the album he'll buy it.

    Very likely, anybody who listens a band on an indie label knows that it's good to contribute.

    i've always thought this was tru, i have discovered alot of small time local artists through torrents and i always end up buying their cd/ going to their concerts

    This is definitely not true for me, i havent bought a dvd or cd in years, in fact i can't even remember the last time i paid for a cd.
    However, i do believe it does improve concert sales etc.. Lesser known bands and movies will definitely recieve a wider audience due to file-sharing.
