Well see I'm a statistic too .... as far as music... I do download things...but there are a couple of things... If an artist has a major label and their backing I expect nothing but perfection for any cd over $10(usd) I download EVERYTHING before I buy it.....if after listening at my leisure...(not in the store on some nasty demo headphones that 20000 people have had wrapped around their head.) I feel the art was worth it. ART is the key word...when I download something and it's crap...well I look at it as saving the artist bad publicity. If I had payed for it (remember at least in the US if you buy a cd ..once you open it its only an exchange for the same cd ..no returns.) and it was horrible.. I would piss and moan to everyone that would listen that this cd was the biggest waste of money ever ...and I would have some choice expletives to throw out there about said artist/label = that would hurt an artist worse than piracy ever could.

And to further that example...I have more friends that know nothing about computers than do. As an example 8 days ago I asked a friend if he wanted to start using torrents ..I told him what kind of things are on trackers...his response.....(mind you he is one of the people that actually has a pc that I know) "so this is just like npster"...LOL. My point is when a friend jumps in my car he will hear something I downloaded and may not have purchased....and likes it...90% of the time they go buy it..I just became a low cost promotional tool without trying... because most don't stop to think how valuable your word is to a friend as far as advice verse someone in a magazine or tv ad that you don't know. I think a lot of people here take it for granted the brainpower it takes to make a pc do what you want...and seriously overestimate the capabilities of general population...

I think the proper equasion to figure out their losses would be to figure out how many people download and how many people buy. and since the most they would lose is one sale to one person when it comes to media they should be thankful since ..as it was mentioned earlier in this thread .( STUDY: Pirates Buy 10 Times More Music Than They Steal )...because of people like us, computer-illiterate people around the world are hearing about new artists they never would have...
example.. I have heard of lady gaga...because of her style of music and some of the drama surrounding her....I wrote her off as an artist never hearing her music. Because of a youtube link I clicked in a torrent community chatroom, was able to in the privacy of my own home , listen to a song or two of hers and find that she is in fact quite talented and those that like that kind of music would be well invested buying that cd. I won't buy it myself as her music is not my taste..but...now if someone asks I won't be saying that she is trying to sell an inferior product and that coming from a friend who doesn't even like that style might just make one more sale.

OP should have linked to the actual article, or read it, instead of the Zp post. Always check your sources.

The original article actually states, "Music pirates buy ten times more music than those who never download for free, according to BI-examination."

This makes a lot more sense as anyone who would download music for free would feel much more comfortable making online purchases than someone who has never downloaded music "illegally".

    Source for the Zp article

I don't get why people don't believe it, it makes perfect sence.

Would you buy a car you hadn't test-drove? No? Would you then if you had test droven it, and liked it? Yes? Well duh.

It's the same reason as 60% of all pirates, pirate games only to "Try it before you buy it", seeing as hardly anyone makes demos nowdays.

Not litterally but P2P does have a say in entertainment business. A recent study in France after adoption of 3-strike law that the music industry would hurt if people got their internet suspended as a large part of people in France buy music online nowadays. And these people download P2P contents too.
