Haha I know the reason for this phenomenon. Since I'm a statistic in this case. :001_tongue:
The reason is that we want to spread the music as fast as possible so we buy it digitally as soon as it's made available and spread it throughout all the topsites and trackers we're on.

As much as corps say we're stealing and all that bullcrap, in reality we're spreading the artist's name. There are SOOoOooOoooo many artists that I would never have known about if it weren't for filesharing and p2p.

I tend not to buy a lot but when I do buy something it tends to be very expensive like I bought a xbox 360 but bootleg the games or i have an iphone but bootleg the apps. Technology is getting way more expensive ...like there's no way im buying an ipad for $499-$599..id rather go to the library and take out a book for free. :P

This is a great study that supports once more the need for a new model of distribution from the industry. I have noticed that I have a lower propensity to download a movie if I get to see it in cinema first. And if available for rent probably will get it before bothering to download a copy. Problem is they do not want it available to all and not at the same time and not at the same price.

This goes back to the VHS introduction when they sued VCR manufacturers just as they try to sue ISPs now for promoting piracy.

The assumption made is that the poor third country teenager will spend a month worth of income and buy a copy of the $30 Blu-Ray or something not to mention software. These studies do not take into consideration the value of word of mouth advertising (trust me I know how much money this can bring you since I live out of it).

So let's see how much does it cost the company to have a copy downloaded from a free distribution system by a person who would not even consider looking at the product in the first place if it was for money. Nothing. How much do they gain if that person actually likes the product and start spreading the word maybe persuading others (maybe an employer) to buy it? Lots. What if that person actually starts buying the product or similar stuff. Even better! Not to mention that konVILEuted is right on, it takes time and money to acquire and distribute the copies in the first place

This is the future where time is the most important commodity.

Lol doubt it. Maybe we buy 10x more shit than non-p2p users but 10x what we dl for free? Wow i would be 10s of thousands of dollars in debt :/ and I'm sure most people here would be in similar situations.

Also here is something interesting that I don't quite undertstand.

    The report says here
"the study reports that file-sharers actually buy 10 times as much music as they download for free."

    And then the next paragraph
“The results suggest that they are buying twice as much music as they get for free"

Anyone else thinking wtf? It just said that they buy 10x as much and then that suggests they buy 2x as much???

I agree with konviluted - we would have never known about several artists if not for file sharing and ptp.

Another remarkable thing about file sharing is that it brings the world so closer. For example I wouldn't have known of world cinema -for example a film in russia, yougoslavia or romania if not for file sharing. I wouldnt have been able to know about Beethoven or Beatles if it was not for file sharing.

Many people have already tried to explain that we pay for it in other ways, like I pay for my music when I buy ringtones, merchandise, go to concerts, etc. What always gets me about this topic is that I remember for the last 2 decades I have recorded and copied music from friends and off of the radio. I never worried about some copyright police knocking at my door or sending me a threatening letter. So now that the media in which we acquire and store this stuff has changed and can be tracked, monitored and recorded is it such a problem. I don't agree with people that actually "pirate" media, i.e. actually make a profit from it. That is the only time I can see any true theft and damage being done. We're all friends here, just sharing our "libraries". )
