We have seen a recent rash of accounts being hi-jacked by unscrupulous individuals. And as a result, we are having to disable for too many accounts. It's important that users take the time to ensure their account security, else they get compromised & subsequently disabled.
The likely routes for getting your account compromised include keeping an insecure or non-unique password for the site or your email, and getting trojaned.
Use a secure (non-dictionary) and UNIQUE password. Don't use a password that you use anywhere else. Many sites keep their password indexes in plaintext (worst case), or unsalted, and a compromise may occur or unscrupulous admin may abuse your password.
Keep your machine(s) clean. As generally security principles, install your OS from known clean media (for Windows, validate your iso against the MSDN checksum); run anti-virus and/or monitor your machine for suspect processes (using something OTHER then taskmgr); and be very careful with what you download and install.
When logging in from a public location, do basic checks to ensure the machine's security, and ALWAYS logout of your account after you are done.
If you're logging in from a public wifi network, make sure you're using an HTTPS connection, otherwise the dude sitting next to you probably just got your password.
Never divulge your passkey or password to ANYONE;
SCC staff won't ask you for these private details. Sharing your account is a great way to lose your account; you never know when even your best friend might stab you in the back.
Your account security is your responsibility so keep it secure and remember that we disable ALL compromised accounts no exceptions.
