Default Camcorder Piracy Epidemic Forces Studios To Delay Screenings

While the rest of the world enjoys the latest theatrical releases, for the foreseeable future the Hungarian public will be subjected to a Hollywood-enforced time delay and a ban on midnight screenings. The action is in response to the discovery that a string of cammed blockbusters turning up on the Internet originated from cinemas in Hungary.

While all kinds of piracy are a thorn in the side of Hollywood, when illicit movies appear on the Internet at the same time as theatrical releases, this particularly draws the ire of studios.

Over the past decade an awful lot of money has been spent trying to mitigate the problem. Intense lobbying in the United States has transformed camming into a serious felony and pressure on other countries, Canada in particular, has significantly reduced the number of copies from these traditional sources.

But of course, there are always others ready to take up the slack and it appears that in recent times that role has been filled by Hungarian pirates. This year, probably using secret watermarks, the major studios including Sony Pictures, 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. have been tracing copies of first-run movies back to local cinemas.

While the problem has existed for some time, a source familiar with the situation believes it came to a head recently when Hangover Part II turned up online just after its premiere. Videoed in a Hungarian cinema, this copy initially had fairly limited appeal due to its dubbed local language audio. But as usual, pirates have innovative tricks up their collective sleeves.

Due to tough legislation (not to mention tools such as night-vision goggles) camming usually proves very difficult, say, in the United States. However, recording just the sound from a movie onto a small portable device is not. So, armed with the video to Hangover Part II obtained by a Hungarian release group and a soundtrack easily culled from an English-language region, pirates connected to the P2P release group ‘EP1C’ spliced the pair together producing an end product with massive appeal.

This illicit release, added to the many others coming out of Hungary this year, appears to have caused Warner Bros to run out of patience. The studio has now announced that in order to stop piracy, for the foreseeable future their movies will not be released locally, on or even close to US release dates. In addition, Warner are said to have banned midnight screenings in Hungary altogether, presumably since these quieter times are more popular with cammers.

In recent months many of the key illicit copies, including Hangover Part II, have been made available by a Hungarian release group known as CiNEDUB. Keep an eye on this group for the rest of the year for an indication of whether or not Warner’s strategy is working.

Hmm interesting, it will never be stopped unless they strip search everyone before they entered the cinema.

I haven't watched a CAM in a quite a number of years, and from what I remember the quality of a CAM was quite bad.
If this is still true, how can a watermark even be visible?

It's an interesting move by Hollywood. But how much can they delay opening dates without losing more box office revenue than the perceived loss from CAM releases? I don't know about anyone else.. but if I like a CAM release, then I want to go see the movie in the theatre afterwards. It's like 'the sky is falling, the sky is falling' refrain that the music industry shouted for years about music sharing. When in fact music sales stayed level and increased in some quarters. Wider exposure to music just fueled more demand to buy retail music.

I've suspected that they must be using watermarks or something like that for years to identify source venues. The watermarks don't have to be small or invisible, they can be subtle, but large defects, on-screen marks, corner crops, color shifts, etc. But AFAIK, a lot of the CAM stuff is often put together from three or four sources anyway. And for that matter, some of the CAM releases that I have seen are surprisingly good quality.

lif this works (for the few days/weeks till 10 people in other countrys take its place) watch as sales of cinema tickets drop all over the world

what they dont seem to realise is getting a job as a projectionist at the cinemas isnt that hard and they arent that well paid

if anything if the movie is worth watching people will still go and watch at the cinemas even after watching a cam and if they had confidence in their work cams would be the best advertising they could have

i think it will be something like this they are using !

    What does Cinavia technology do?
Some releases of movies, television shows and other professionally produced video (such as those shown in movie theaters, on commercial airliners, and in hotels’ “on-demand” movie services) are intended for duplication and playback on professional equipment only.
Other releases (such as most Blu-ray Disc, DVD, and authorized downloads over the Internet) are meant for use on consumers’ in-home and mobile devices, but are not meant for copying by consumers, or are only permitted to be copied in limited ways (for example, to a limited number of computers, recordable discs, or devices).
Cinavia technology is used in Blu-ray Disc players to identify and limit the use of copies of these movies, television shows, and other professionally produced videos that have been made without the permission of the copyright owner.
    How does Cinavia technology work?
Movies protected by Cinavia technology carry inaudible codes embedded by the copyright owner in their audio tracks that indicate where and how they are allowed to be used.
For example, movies that are being released to theaters can carry a Cinavia code that indicates that they are supposed to be duplicated by professional replicators and played back on professional projection equipment only.
Movies that are released on Blu-ray Disc, DVD, or by authorized download services, can carry a different Cinavia code, indicating that these movies are intended for use by consumers, but with limitations regarding whether or how they can be copied.
The Cinavia codes are designed to stay in the audio tracks wherever they appear, including after they are copied, converted to different formats, or captured by a camcorder.
Blu-ray Disc players read Cinavia codes from the audio track of video that they are playing or copying and may limit the use of the video when certain unauthorized uses are identified. Playback or copying of unauthorized copies may be stopped or audio may be muted, depending on which Cinavia code is found and what operation is being performed. This may include limiting the unauthorized use of the audio tracks that accompany professionally produced videos in home movies and other personal recordings. Whenever the use of content is limited due to a Cinavia code, an explanatory message is provided on the video screen or on the front panel of the Blu-ray Disc player.
In any case, you can rest assured that Cinavia technology is not “watching” what you are watching. By design, it can not collect or transmit information about you, your viewing habits or media selections. Cinavia codes are not individualized to you, the media, or the devices that you own and never contain any personal or personally identifiable information.
