    OiNK Uploaders finally sentenced!

OiNK uploaders were finally sentenced on charges of copyright infringement. Their sentence?

Hundreds of hours of community service and the payment of court fines (somewhere around 378 GBP). One of them got off with just a 500GBP fine (oddly enough his name was Michael Myers - insert Halloween joke here).

The only person left, the site admin - Alan Ellis still has yet to be sentenced, and won't be until at least March 2009. Court has been adjourned until then.

Apparently these four guys had such good lawyers and such good references that they managed to stray from a much worse custodial sentence. This is a very good thing, since it's the first trial of it's kind in the U.K., and will set the benchmark for future cases of the like. Hopefully the world too. Paying a small fine and doing a couple hundred hours of community service is a pain, but it's not prison!

Sucks to be them, but still not a bad deal considering no jail time and no damages awarded.

Are there any further court appearances e.g. civil suits does anyone know?

I suppose in the grand scheme of things that's a reassuring sentence. At least the UK isn't making the same mockery of their judicial system as we are here. 2 of my friends in school have been forced to leave because RIAA early settlements cost them more than they could afford to stay in school. Download a song on campus, pay up to $7500 to the RIAA out of pocket. That's basically worth it I'd say.

i'm just glad that this will set a bench mark now, so future tracker organisers wont be put off...

not really bad news. there is no jail time. unless i am wrong, i thought i saw only community service. its really not THAT bad you know. i am from texas, usa. this is where if you kill someone you have a good chance to get life in prison or the death penalty. so in perspective its really not that bad

I know what you wanna say schuwe but to compare the law system by having a murder on the one side and filesharing on the other isnt that compareable right ? I think they can be very happy with their penalty ...
