    Default ISP Letters

Hey guys, just makin this thread to discuss any and all isp letter and/or threats you have gotten. any funny stories about downloading something you might have, or anything like that.

I also have a quick question. now obviously when when non-private torrenting you risk getting tracked and reported therefore getting warnings from your isp. now most of us have isp's like qwest, comcast, etc. and i know there is a small chance of the company actually taking action and getting prosecuted and blah blah blah. im not here to discuss the likelyhood of getting in trouble. i was wondering if mobile phone companies send out copyright warning letters. For example, if you download something and get tracked, but are not connected to a normal isp, instead you are downloading through your phone's mobile hotspot which is getting it's internet through the 3g Data service provided by your mobile company, will your mobile carrier send you a letter? if not, what action would be taken if any at all. or is downloading through the 3g satellites un-trackable?

just wondering, thanks for any response :) and happy torrenting

I'd imagine anything is trackable! Does anybody download torrents over their mobile phone? Maybe ask this guy:

Man Downloads TV Shows and Gets a $54,000 Cell Phone Bill | TorrentFreak

I wonder if you used tons of traffic on these unlimited plans if your cell phone company wouldn't contact you to say you are abusing the service?

I get letters, mails and warnings a lot telling me to stop my uploads. Somehow I get 10-20 times upload speed than my download speed and it looks like my ISP can't do anything about it (actually they are just reseller/distributor of a major ISP, I guess they can't control Bandwidth!). So what the hell .. I keep uploading .. Its not my fault that they can't manage their BW!!

Your ISP honestly doesn't care what you download on your connection.
They are only forwarding letters from the copyright holders of whatever you are downloading.

What the cell-phone guy got slapped for was using excessive bandwidth on a cellphone connection. If you do normal browsing, youtube viewing on your cell you would be hard-pressed to break 10-12GB in a month.

This is a great point freu0047 makes. You have to understand that your ISP has no vested interested to punish you. They really don't care what you are doing as long as they are getting your monthly bill. I have gotten DMCA notices before and all they really say is the infringing file you downloaded along with some other details. The only reason they give you these warnings is because it is required by law (DMCA Copyright Act of 1998).

And in response to the second part of your question, using your mobile carriers 3g plan would be considered safer IMO. I have never heard of anyone receiving a DMCA notice through their mobile carrier. The reason for this, I believe, is that you are given a dynamic IP address through your mobile carrier. Meaning, that it changes often and therefore it is difficult to track who was in use of the IP address at the particular time an infringing file was downloaded. Most home connections, provided by your ISP, are static IP addresses. Meaning they stay the same. So it is much easier to trace.
