    Default Bittorrenting Jargon?

If I came up to you and started talking to you about medicine, then the conversation could get interesting.

... However, if I started discussing the function and dysfunction of the adenohypophysis, neurohypophysis, and mentioned the relation of endocrine function to osteology then things could fall apart quickly.

    --

Let's take this example to familiar territory.

When I read a lot of posts about trackers, I often run into the same issue with jargon. Though, what is jargon?

Jargon refers to technical terminology that's specific to a particular area or field.

When I use the words adenohypophysis, neurohypophysis, endocrine, and osteology they may seem unfamiliar or confusing. Though, to a medical professional, these words may simply seem like terms in everyday language.

That's to observe the duality of language.

I don't at all find it acceptable to curse someone for not understanding terms that may seem commonplace to several others. Misunderstanding is the greatest form of evil, and to promote it... well, means to contribute to the malice.

I've seen that nature many times through my experiences on internet forums regarding various spaces of interest.

So, I mean to ask the more understanding and knowledgeable to explain their interpretations of the 'tracker jargon' so to speak.

    --

Here are several terms I've very little to no understanding about.

    Seedbox

I've seen many people refer to these, yet I've never understood what they've been referring to. I imagine a physical device (like a hard drive, but a more sophisticated neon light-filled box-looking apparatus) yet it doesn't seem to be accurate when trying to apply this imagined idea in context.

    Pre-Times

I got a general idea that this refers to how quick to the instant an upload occurs with the latest content in the market. I'm not sure about the origin of the term, and it's still a bit trivial to understand when trackers are compared with pre-times when I've been told they're relatively meaningless. Why even bother making the term?

    Cross Seeding

While I've some idea that this refers to seeding a file over several trackers... well, from my knowledge that's not allowed at many trackers I've joined so I'm ambiguous about this term's meaning.

    Tracker

I understand that a torrent is a miniature file hosted on a 'tracker' that opens up in a bittorrent client which enables the downloading process to occur. Though, what exactly is the etymology of the word 'tracker' as it's used? What does it even mean? My only idea of the verb 'to track' finds itself in imagining something being followed.

    --

That's all I could come up with at this time of night. I'll try to add my own knowledge of basic definitions of 'leeching' and 'seeding' among others from my logic and through what I've learned.

Hopefully we can all generate understanding and make this era and experience a lot more friendly and fun for people alive and participating in it.

This is a very good thread topic and you will get many answers ranging from the very simple to the very complex. I will give my spill in the very simplest of forms.

    Seedbox

It's a private dedicated server somewhere you can use to download your files. It provides security and unparalleled speeds both up and down. And you can transfer those files back and forth to your home connection. These are usually leased for an extended amount of time.

    Pre-Times

Pre in this case is when a scene group uploads their release to a top site. For the scene, the race to pre is their focus. For a scene tracker (P2P, not to be confused with scene), the race to grab the release after it's pred is their main drive. So, the time it takes for a P2P tracker to upload a scene release after it's been pred is the pre-time.

    Cross Seeding

Is taking a file from one tracker and finding the similar file on another tracker and seeding it. The act of cross seeding takes place when you seed the file to the second tracker. And since you already have the file (you got it at the first tracker, remember?) there's no cost to your download at the second tracker and you reap the benefits of pure upload. You can do this for a third or even a fourth tracker and most places have no problem with it just as long as YOU DO IT CORRECTLY.

    Tracker

A tracker, like a seed box is also a larger server. In the case of the private community, a tracker connects you to the swarm and tells your client where to find peers who are either downloading or seeding the same file you're trying to get. Since the tracker is private you will know that the peers you're connected to are also members of the tracker your client announced to.
