Thread: BitTorrent dl speed vs ISP speed

I use Verizon FiOs and get a download speed of about 15mbs
However, I the fastest download I have seen in my uTorrent client is a 1.7mbs (not that I sit there and stare at it of course :P)

Im not complaining, but wondering what bitTorrent download speeds other people are getting in relation to their ISP download speed.

For math people like me, my bitTorrent speed is about 11.3% of my ISP speed.




So, what are you max bitTorrent and ISP speeds?

ISPs advertise speed in bits (lowercase "b"). What you're seeing in uTorrent is bytes (uppercase "B"). 15megabits is equal to about 1.8 megabytes. You are downloading close to your max speed.

Yep, like the above poster indicated, there's a difference between bits and bytes. 8 bits = 1 byte. So, 1.7mB/s = 13.6mbps, which is within 90% of your ISPs advertised speeds. Definitely within the excepted range.

Man, just wanted to say I am definitely envious. I wish Qwest would die so Verizon Internet would come to my area :D.

I know that there is a difference between bits and bytes, but didn't know ISP advertise with bits!

Also, after reading this post, I checked speedtest.net and for the first time I noticed it said "megabits" and not "megabytes" haha I learned something new!
