Thread: Links site to file as opposed to torrents and news groups?

So a friend of mine just got into a site that hosts direct links to files. Here is what I know about it.

You upload a file, that file then gets rated up or down by users , for each vote you get or lose a token. You can then use those tokens for special abilities, privileges or for access into special boards.



I believe this place is called a TOPSITE as according to the wiki definition for scene?



My friend also claims this method is much safer than torrenting because all the files are being hosted by the website similar to newsgroups. There are no ip's that people are connecting to.

Can anyone please shed some light on the pros and cons to this and what its called? He calls it a link site. I wont link to the site but I have seen him use it and it is legit.

from what I was able to gather per a conversation with a friend of mines in Spain is that it is sort of like a p2p system where you would have to use an application in his case he said he use something call mule and you connect to site and get file this a link to the site he uses, he was not to detail as he does not understands computers to any extreme Bienvenidos a la portada hopes this helps

Well, you would call it a topsite when you access it by ftp, have a monthly quota of 1TB and a 1:3 ratio.

Then, and only then, it would be a topsite.
The rating system you name seems very odd to me :S never heard off something like that in site-scene :S

I will get more info from friend. I was kind of cool looking, but it seems most rep or tokens are received for uploading a file. Which I just don't do , I download --> Seed like crazy--> Store for later in my vault.

I do remember him saying that the links are all to the files which are hosted on rapidshare I think?

Well, a topsite will never use rapidshare links :P

A topsite is a dedicated server running some ftp software, so you can only login through ftp, and download via ftp.

Sorry to disappoint you, but this is definitely not a topsite :P

Anyone know yet what this is ?
