I used to have Comcast. I switched last year for two reasons.

1 - Price, they charged me 65 a month for internet.
2 - Download cap. For the 65 a month I would expect an unlimited cap at least, but nope. 250GB.

I ended up watching my limit each month with a program I downloaded. I had it set me to warn me at 175GB so I know when it was getting close to my limit. I got to around 250GB each month, but usually had to be careful near the end. Due to the limit though I had to stay on public trackers so I could stop the transfer right after the torrent was done downloading.

Now I have Verizon DSL, yeah it's slower, but it's half the price, and there is no limit on downloading/uploading. I now leave my torrents run almost 24 hours a day without any worrying.

If Fios ever comes in my area though I'll be switching to that and be willing to pay the extra money for the speed and true unlimited transfer.

good to know. i just switched to them from cable. My cablevision optonline service had this Boost plan for an extra $10 a month that increased my speed and allowed me to host servers (opened ports 25 and 80). Because of this they stopped monitoring my bandwith usage. FiOS didn't have the pay extra for those options, just for increases in speed so I was curious if they were going to hassle me or not.

FiOS won't hassle you, they really don't care. Infact, when the FiOS installer came to my house to hook everytihng up he saw the little "u" in the green box at the bottom right of my screen and advised me to switch to Deluge, we swapped emails and he invites me to private trackers now. I love them for that, and also for the fact that I break a TB monthly and have never heard a word. The speeds are insane too, it actually takes me longer to ftp a file from my seedbox than it takes for me to torrent it most times, but I still love having the seedbox and FiOS it makes for crazy ratio buffers on most trackers. I can't recommend a switch to FiOS for anyone who is capable.

Monet, how much data did you use? I'm curious because I have Comcast too, and once I nearly went over 250GB. I've heard though that people have used 350GB without complaint from Comcast. 600GB, I've heard, will cause them to call.

From the research I've done, it seems that other than Comcast, my only other options are dialup (slow!!!) and satellite ($$$), so I definitely don't want to risk getting cut off.

Also, Monet, you might be able to sign up for a Comcast business plan in the meantime. I've heard they don't have caps, although they are expensive.

I have comcast as well. I have never gotten a warning in my 6 years + of downloading torrents. That really sucks man. I would also advise a seedbox. Although i dont torrent much any more, i just use it for music and a few movies and programs here and there. I really want to get Fios, but it isnt available where i live. I also stream a lot of movies from my macbook to my ps3. would that count towards your uploading downloading limit?

Oh man, that's not good... Sorry to hear man. I have Comcast too and now you have me worried. I just checked my statistics for uTorrent and it looks like i'm up to 170Gb in 31 days....

Soooo... Looks like I'll be throttling my limit then...

Thanks for the warning man! Sorry you had to learn the hard way :(

Although I am sure they would love to figure out a way to charge you for traffic within your intranet, I assure you that streaming from your mac to PS3 will not count against this ratio. Stream away!
