Default Your opinion on the ratio systems

What are your opinions of the ratio systems out there?

    Here's my take:
Having got more embedded into the world of private trackers, I have noticed that the ratio system doesn't seem to be such a great idea.

It creates this battle between users to fight for ratio numbers. Their weapons? The old seedbox and the cross-seed. This destroys the whole purpose of torrenting in my opinion. It also creates ratio hogs.

I'm not saying ratios shouldn't exist. But I think they should be used as statistical reference. I think they should be used to prove your worth to higher trackers, not be used as a guillotine ever looming over your head.

I think the tracking world would survive just fine if more trackers implemented ratio-less systems such as F*N and PtN have.

I actually Like ratio tracker over ratiofree trackers...I seed for long time but still don't like someone forcing me to seed for some hour and all....

it is the ratio trackers and seedbox becouse of which you get a high speed and trackers like FTN have there level if all trackers are ratiofree you will get a crap speed like how you get in public trackers....and as FTN,PTn won't be all that awesome cause all are ratiofree noone will bother trying to get some upload up...it will be like public tracker...no speed just many seeders and leeches...

simple thing is that if someone don't have a seedbox why you even try to get to those tracker where it is hard to seed...just stick with tracker you can survive...

^^ Not on FTN, but I'm on BTN,PTN and GFT. All three are ratio-less, and honestly I love their systems!

But I'm still on the fence if a persons ratio should drop below 1.0?

I've been on enough Ratio-Free trackers to know that the ratio system in many cases is less effective. It never proves to be a problem for me, however, as you pointed out, it, in many cases, defeats the whole purpose of filesharing. BTN, GFT and PTM are all ratio-free trackers that do just as well, if not better, than their ratio-requiring comparisons.

exactly my point. You have already proven yourself a good user by getting into the higher level tracker. Though, yes users should still try to achieve the equilibrium of a 1.0 ratio.

I don't like them being used to force people to seed. I like being able to see how much I've down/uploaded but sometimes it's hard to seed back what you DL (especially if it's not a popular torrent) and this means I can't DL any more until I seed back the other torrents which can take weeks :(

I only like ratio trackers because users then go and buy seedboxes and it keeps all torrents fast, and older torrents are seeded for long times. But the site has to give freeleech, due to ratio hogs and their seedboxes.
But I hate some of these ratio free sites that have no seeders on old torrents and crap speeds.

Forcing people to seed is more of a necessity; and all the ratioless trackers I'm on except FTN have a compulsory seed time or a 1:1 upload requirement because that's required for torrents to last. FTN has a community that it's so confident of that they've removed the minimum seeding time requirements, and you still find old torrents with seeders with good speeds here.

The ratio system just works for certain trackers - though I do agree if you are on the lower end of the speed spectrum (like I am) it may be tough to compete with members who have seedboxes or great speeds. But then battling for ratio numbers, like you say is up to the user, you could instead just opt to keep the required ratio to survive and maybe a bit of a buffer, which shouldn't be a problem with most trackers if you seed long enough. The others which are too tough to hold on to the required ratio just don't get into - join trackers you know you can maintain.

Another thing to keep in mind while joining ratio-based trackers is seeding the torrents in high demand - I was experimenting with this on a few trackers, and for e.g. - on Bitme, I ended up building a solid buffer and a great ratio in a month's time.

Well just going by the simple math, in a tracker however much data has been downloaded also had to be uploaded at some point, so therefore amount of data uploaded = amount of data downloaded. Meaning if you have a ratio of 1.2 someone out there has to have a ratio of 0.8 to balance it out, meaning not everyone could have a ratio above 1.0. And you look at someone with a seedbox with a ratio like 7, and you can see how the system is flawed.

Granted there are variables that could effect this situation such as users being disabled and freeleech, but for the most part the ratio system is going to screw people. I'm forced to download torrents I don't even care about just because I anticipate other people will download them or they are new, just so I can download what I really want, or have to abuse freeleech, like on SCC. This basically makes the trackers look like some sort of gimick, game, competition against fellow members, trackers should be about fellowship, not racing to see who can get a torrent on their seedbox the fastest. Like SCC's freeleech section for example, I mean how dumb is it that probably 99 out of 100 people who download stuff there are doing so just to buffer their accounts, I mean nobody even cares about or uses the content, they just download it and then delete it when the seeding has died down.

Another thing about the ratio system, it discourages the downloading of old content. Even with a seedbox on many trackers like waffles I can't download everything I'd like to. I'm stuck playing the new torrent (that nobody really cares about) race until I get enough buffer to download older content I want, while at the same time having to keep my ratio above ratio in a range to keep my power user status.

Short version, ratioless ftw (or plenty of freeleech opprotunites!)
