Thread: Just learned something (about) cross-seeding

I swear I've read a lot over the past 24 hours and I am not sure that this has been covered or is known by all. If it, sorry :) I mean well.



Also, this may be specific to BS, I don't know.

I joined BS yesterday and as with many trackers, you have a 24 hour wait period when you start out before you are allowed to download torrents. So I set out help seed a torrent that I got elsewhere to help me get towards 5gigs (which will remove the 24 hour wait period).

Here was the interesting test I did today and lo and behold it worked.

I had a new release downloaded from another tracker and on BS it was still inside the 24 hour period so I couldn't download it. BUT I tried anyways and what do you know, I'll currently seeding it at BS and TL. It seems the 24 hour period is only for downloading actual data but you can seed torrents anyways. This will really reduce the time it takes me to get to 5 gigs uploaded to get rid of the 24 hour wait period AND will help greatly to build my ratio right off the bat.

So, have I discovered the obvious? Is this plastered everywhere and I've completely missed it? Or is this helpful to anyone?

Well It is obious thing you can seed the torretn but not download it...for my TL account I used the same trick on my seedbox and was able to get 8-10GB up in notime..he he

I suppose it might be obvious but it wasn't to me :) I figured it being inside the 24 hour window would stop me from interacting with it in any way. It's been a loooong time I've started on a new tracker so I guess I just never thought to find this out at the time I joined TL. WIth over 1TB up and down over there, I've been rather exclusive and never looked, hehe.

Anywho, maybe it'll help someone out there, you never know :)

This will only work on some trackers, I do believe that RevTT have included waiting time even for seeding.

Ah, interesting. Wonder if there is enough data to get a list of which trackers allow seeding during this period. Not sure it would be worth it as you're only under 5gbs for a little while.

Well I guess most of them allow it but you should have the full file then only it works...

once I had same release but when I added hash check it was showing my .001 as 99% and I was not able to seed as the time restriction error was coming..

well but it worked for some release in that there was a game of 5 Gb where I got all my upload

Gotcha. I was indeed suprised that the hash was successful but as you mention, possibly they aren't as strict at BS.

they indeed do

I do this myself. I'm on several trackers with similar content, so when a new release hits i check to see if the files are the same on most trackers, then just d/l the torrent from all of them. I only start one to d/l the data, then once that's done, i start all the other torrents from the different trackers and it starts seeding them. Very good for your ratio =]
