As far as I understand it, magnet links were developed for standardizing the existing hash formats( of different p2p sytems). The magnet link does this by acting as an 'umbrella' for many types of hashes. You therefore only require a P2P program that supports “magnet links” in order to employ the functionality and compatibility of most hash formats. Source is from FSF
I'm not sure I understand where these magnet links are going, or the advantage of them over .torrent files. Is the goal to dodge some of the heat from the law enforcement? If it is, I doubt that this small change will stop them. They already misrepresent what we are doing, I doubt this would unconfuse them. It's confusing me a little bit :(
