The deadline is September 13th, 2009. Take action now!
As you may or may not know, we in Canada are protected by our privacy laws from lawsuits instigated by copyright holders. The current Canadian government is proposing a new law called bill C-61 modeled after the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) from the USA. If you like the idea of being sued for $100,000 per song you download, or you like not being able to legally copy your own CD's to your portable music player, then do nothing. However, if you care about preserving your rights, write a short letter and submit it before September 13, 2009. Snail main is preferred, but Email will do. I'll make your job easier by pointing you in the right direction.
This is is a recent article from TorrentFreak that will give you some brief back ground on the issue: Canadians Caught as Copyright Consultation Nears Conclusion | TorrentFreak
This is the jumping off point where you can find the information and addresses you will require: Take Action | Speak Out On Copyright
You should send your letter to both the copyright consultation group set up by the government AND your local MP. The second link has this information under the section titled "Speak Out". Also, tell your friends. Tell your family. Get as many people as possible to voice their opinion. Your letter doesn't have to be long. Just a short note expressing yourself will suffice. IMO, you want to express two ideas. First, that you are unhappy with bill C-61. And second, that you are a voter.
Please, please, please, make the effort.
