Thread: Why do people cheat?

Hi, i am fairly new here and am wondering or have questions on the topic of cheating. First, let me say that i cant stand cheaters. Not just in the torrent world, but in the world in general. I just dont get why people have to cheat. To me it shows how low a persons character is and i feel its not only shameful, but disrespectful to hard working individuals. I can go on forever about this , but wont.

Now that i have my partial view of cheating across, I can ask my questions. Why do people cheat in the torrent world? I just dont get it? I read so many threads on T-I that consist of ratio cheaters, etc... Why do they do it to begin with? Not only is it against the rules at every tracker, but its flat out wrong. I cant believe how many cheaters their are out there. What are they trying to accomplish by cheating especially with their ratio? I dont understand. Are they trying to impress people or get into higher level trackers? Dont they know they will eventually be caught by doing this? I mean they have to understand what there doing is wrong and they will be caught & put out in the open one day. Plus, once a cheater always a cheater and this will give u a negative rep in the torrent world. Not only that, but banned at all trackers. If i understand this, how can they not? They must not care about anything and just want what they want. To me thats messed up.



Sorry this post is so long, but i want a better understanding why people do this cause im confused. If someone could help me understand why?, that would be awesome. Also if older members can show me what to look for that would be great also. This has me scared to give invites out and i want to know how to spot a cheater so i dont get banned from any of my trackers for inviting a cheater. I still cant believe how many are out there. Thanks in advance.

I believe cheaters cheat because cheating simplifies things. It makes hard things easy and probably gets you where you want to be faster. The second reason I can think of is because it is illegal. Some people just have a need for illegal things. Be it drugs or criminallities (not spelled right). It 'turns them on' to do things that have been forbidden. Mostly cheaters consist of two groups. The first and smallest groups are smart cheaters. They've developed their own ways (btw i'm not only talking about torrent cheaters) and know the risks, are smartmouthed and can weasel their way out of a lot of things. The second group is just fucking stupid. There is no other word for it. They think cheating is an fine alternative to hard work and expect the results of their cheating to unfold before them without having to do a lot of work. These are the people that are very offended when banned etc. they think they can do certain actions without consequences. They don't think about the risks it can bring for them or other people, they just don't care.

well, NOT all cheaters do it for fun.. some have extremely low upload band and they are forced to do it to keep ratio at 1:1. others wan`t to get higher ranks faster, to get in P.U forums where some great deals are to get. Finally the scum of the earth, cheaters that they just do it cause they can`t without it, like an drug.

How to stay away of cheaters ?? well don`t give invite to the new users that don`t have any give away, zero posts or low, low speeds and no seedbox.

There will be always those people who think they are better then ther rest of us.
Who think they are smarter then everyone else and so on.

In real life i tend to stay away from people like that because they tend to influence all those around.

In p2p like kidumik said some people have bad uploads and they cheat so they can get everything they want or need.

While others cheat so they can bragg they go away with it. Ive known a few cheater in these 2-3 years, and you guys know what?

I still have all my accounts and they dont.

One day its going to catch you from behind....

Thanks for the responses everyone. I understand now, but still think there is no excuse for cheating. I guess i just have to do my homework on the people before i invite them anywhere & make smart decisions. That would be the best thing for me to do.

Well, it all depends what their aim is. Some people just want to bump up their ratio so they can download more without having to wait til they've seeded enough. Some peope - as you say - want to get into higher level trackers, where they will cheat so they can download more without having to wait til they've seeded enough.

Ratios are ways of keeping the community fair, because there will always be a lot of people who just want to take and never give. Society in general is just the same - people claiming government benefits because the system allows them to. It's frightening to know what a high proportion of the world's population have such low moral standings, especially where governments give & give and ask so little in return from those they give to. If people were told "We will give you 6 months benefit *IF* you do X, Y, Z" and this was enforced, we might be in a better position, but it's just too easy for people to get money for nothing. (Here you can get out of having to work by claiming to be depressed - in reality, most people who *are* depressive find things easier if they have a job because it keeps them occupied!)

I think some people cheat because they get a thrill out of maybe getting caught. Kind of like people who enjoy having sex in public places say that the thought of maybe getting caught adds to their excitement. And I think some of them do it just to see if they can get away with it.

Spotting a cheater isn't always easy but it can be done if you're careful.

First of all, before you open a giveaway pend some time getting to know the community. After a while, it becomes easy to see who is trusted and who is not. Do not automatically assume that because a person has the VIP gold bar that they are worthy of your trust. Remember anyone can donate on their first day here to buy access to the VIP forums. Make friends and ask for references.

Second, don't give invites away easily or to the first person who asks. Carefully scrutinize each applicant's post history, site reputation, and manner of conducting themselves. Check out their iGiver - do they have a history of trading? In my experience, traders and cheaters go hand in hand.

Third, examine their application thoroughly. Look for signs of shady photoshop editing. Ask for profile links as well as ratio proofs. Look for any discrepencies or unusual numbers. Examine speed tests and compare them to upload numbers. Do the math. Cheaters often forget to crunch the numbers and that's how they get caught.

Fourth, check out their profiles to see how long they've been a member at their current trackers. Are they claiming to have torrented for years but they've only been a member at their current trackers for under a month? This can indicate (but doesn't always) that they've been banned in the past and snuck back in.

And finally, go with your gut. If it doesn't feel right, don't do it.

Yes, I'm agree with you, never hand out your invitations easily, especially when they are from high level trackers with very strict rules.

Seems that we all need to be more skeptic in choosing the right person we would like to invite and not trusting people easily.
