Never really thought about how much of an oldtimer I really am, I can't remember the exact time, but I first started using BitTorrent in late 2001 or early 2002. This wasn't on any site, but an IRC channel of all crazy things. I've always been something of a Star Trek fan and there was this IRC channel were a group of us used to hang out and share the most recently aired episode of Star Trek Enterprise. This was initially done by one user downloading from another and then both users sharing their copies with two more. There were also a sort of depository, run by a couple of the users, you could access and initiate a download of the more recent episodes, not just the very latest. This all changed when one of the users discovered BitTorrent around the turn of 2001/2002 and set up a tracker. Within a week we were all sharing torrent files instead of entire episodes, this was still done in the same IRC channel, no website.

The early client software wasn't much to write home about, for example there was no option in the software to throttle so it consumed your entire upload and download, making it impossible to browse the net, or even keep up with a moderately busy IRC channel! We therefore had to download and use a separate program that limited the network use of the BitTorrent client. I think it might have been the original NetLimiter, but it's been so long that I can't really remember. I can clearly remember when the first client with built in limiting appeared on the scene, it was almost an exact clone of the original client, but added a small slider to limit the max upload and download, I think a later version added a pair of fields where you could manually input max download and upload in kB/s. Ah, those were the days.

Later on I moved on to Suprnova and all the other well known public trackers, though there was this interesting period in between where people made websites for particular subjects, I can clearly remember a website dedicated entirely to the X-files, with one torrent for each episode, each 350mb, I eventually downloaded the lot, but it sure took a while on a 128/384 ADSL connection. I recall that there was an IRC channel associated with this site too, and that people finding an unseeded torrent would request a seed in the channel, I can remember initiating a seed due to such requests several times. As many others have commented on, I too can remember spending huge amounts of money, a little at a time, buying first CDs and later DVDs to store the ever growing library. Quite a change from the 32TB NAS I use these days.

Hope someone find my reminiscences of the "good old days" interesting.

I joined the p2p scene in 2005. I did not even have an internet connection at that time and was using free internet through mobile gprs. I used to download only books. I used to use Torrentz and Demonoid. Axxo was the most famous movie release group. 700MB movies were considered great quality.

I have comes a long way since then and am member on few Private trackers now.
