Default question of technology and morality

    Lets just talk sheerly hypothetically...
if a tracker goes down, but I am still connected to others and seeding/leeching, does this not mean it is now freeleech?

Not that I'm saying I want to, but would it adversely affect me to uncap my downloads when a tracker goes offline? Afterall, then I could seed more when the tracker comes back online right?

hmm, i think u just might get it for free if ur connected to ur peers but i am guessing the tracker is supposed to stop the uploads of the uploaders.

so you shouldn't be getting uploads becuz the tracker IS OFFLINE

but u might be connected to other peers and that's what you might be gettin.. :)

You're right in that when the tracker is offline then so are all the stats up and down. However as soon as the tracker comes back online then it updates with all the stats it's missing for the offline period.
You would have to stop your torrents in order to get any benefit out it and as you don't know when it's going back online you don't know when that will be. Also you can't make hay out it as it only applies to anything you are currently downloading when the tracker goes down. You can't just start a whole pile of new torrents as you can't connect to any new torrents as the tracker is offline.
Same applies if you're seeding also, if the tracker goes down and you stop your torrents, you miss out on any upload due to you if stop them before it goes back up.

Ok, so it does update the stats when it comes back online... I was hoping I could grab the big one to increase my ratio

But you can't start any new torrents. The tracker is offline, so you can't connect to it to get the information required to leech anyway.

If it goes down while you are leeching a torrent. Then if you disconnect before it come back online, none of the stats will be reported. When you reconnect the stats start over. It would be difficult to know when to disconnect and probably only work once or twice a year.
