They seem serious about it. Really resembles pirate radio where people would host radio in international waters off of Britain. I wonder how feasible it is. I've seen piratebox (PirateBox DIY OpenWrt - David Darts Wiki) and that seems cheap. I believe NASA has designed autonomous solar powered UAVs too, but they are expensive.

I really hope they do it and I'm excited at the prospect of it. Those guys are the front line against the American government and I say God bless them

It is gloriously absurd; I hope they actually do it.

I hope they can do it, but honestly i dont think it will be realised in the near future. Theres too many issues left to solve.
For example, take the fact that the drones are battery powered: where do you want to charge them if they are consistenly moving?
Setting up static charging stations is not an option since they could easily be destroyed by the law enforcement.

    think about it:

how many cities in the world have acces to the net?

how many drones are needed to give acces to a fair percentage of a land mass filled with computer and users?

    (question1+question2) x eu$1500 = who will pay for this?

I think it's only a game for now, a pirate-toy. Granted it's science fiction and could do incredible things... as it is now, looks more like Half Life-came-to-life than a real tool.

This was never an issue, it would be economically impossible to take them out of orbit in order to recharge. Most of things in low orbit, like satellites, are powered with solar panels and backup batteries for when they pass the earth' shadow.

Considering that they planned to buy an independant country some time ago, i think this LOSS thing will mostly have bureaucratic and legal issues rather than money or technology. I will believe it when they actually achieve, but i doubt it is going out out of the paper.

I think it is just smoke and mirrors, but it will drive the copyright police crazy!
