I found that most things get released at the same time, however, usenet has far better retention than any torrent site that I have ever used, because if you know how to look you can find any file you want, and I always get the max speed of whatever connection I am using at the time, and always have ssl, but save for the fact that usenet cost money though. I do prefer torrents, but University hates torrents use on their network so I either rent a server, while I am at school or use usenet. I don't think either has that much more over the other except that torrents is far more convenient.

Good question..something i've been wondering myself having never used usenet

Hmmm....would've thought usenett is more convenient as there's no chasing invites and keeping ratios

The real disadvantage is having to pay for it....but if you are thinking of getting or have a seedbox then it's definately worth asking whats better to pay for....

The only disadvantages i've heard about usenet is that you can't get older things that often (not talking about retention) but releases older than say 3 years would be harder to find....also content/variety is not as good as torrents
But if your not after anything old and just looking to get new releases than i'd think usenet would be better considering theres no need to have invite or fulfill ratio requirements and everything is at the same place (no need for various trackers)...well i'm guessing you only need to search within your client or a search site and not have to go to various nzb sites to find stuff....
Not to mention i've heard everyone on usenet say they max out their download everytime
Also...it's meant to be a lot safer through usenet

This all is obviously what i've read/heard and logic....but not had any real experience so someone might want to verify or set things straight

I think the key work on torrente is "sharing". When seedding a file you'll be responsable for sharing knowledge, making it free, besides, you are part of many communities.

I don't know if used net is embebed in this idea.

I wrote a bit about usenet a while back. Usenet is huge and has phenomenal retention times. There isn't any kind of ratio system. And for older material and sometimes for the newest, usenet can be hard to beat.

But your ISP probably doesn't have great access to it.. so you might have to pay a third party provider to really make good use of it. And content is uneven. Stronger than most trackers in some areas and simply inadequate in others. And it is chaotic and rife with spam. If you are looking for a nice GUI - you won't find it here. Usenet aesthetics are the antithesis of a well designed Gazelle tracker.

So while you could find most of what you want on usenet alone.. most people will find their trackers more pleasant to use. Where usenet excels is as an adjunct, an alternative place to locate hard to find material.

At one time, usenet was the internet. The web came later. Now, the majority of people on the net don't know about usenet. What that means is that almost all ISPs will provide you usenet access at no extra charge. But the retention and quality of that access has been dramatically scaled back in recent years because most people never use it.

In practical terms.. your ISP probably provides usenet with a retention time of a few weeks. And some larger downloads may be missing pieces. So to make good use of usenet you might have to pay someone like Giganews, which has a four year retention and no missing pieces.

There are free services and usually limited isp services, but with that you're limited to only the newest releases, and to your second question from my experience I have always achieved the max speed to which I am able, which would be the connection provided by your ISP.

I can agree with MrUniverse i get 100-110mb download, but it takes quite a lot of my pc power to run
but finding files which are 100% extractable/working are quite hard for me, so i always download a tv episode and it doesnt work, download another doesnt work, then after the 5th try i finally get one that works ... might just be my noobyness
