Default Help me get started. Electronic music producer.

Hi guys, so this is my first post after intro was accepted, I can't post in the requests section yet, so..

So I've joined this place to get access to a bunch of good quality stuff.

    I'm looking for:

Loseless electronic music. Trance, psytrance, electro, house, techno.
    Samples.
    VSTS.
    Software.

Have you guys got recommendations, able to help me get started?

I haven't been a 'serious' torrenter, I've always just used public trackers. Recently torrenting was made illegal here in New Zealand, so I've had to invest in a seedbox to keep torrent. Which makes for a good ratio.

Also, electronic music general. Go! :)

Here's one of my tunes if you're interested. (no way to embed soundclouds?)

Incidently, this is the only known copy of this track, I lost my harddrive.... :D

Some advice from someone who's produced and DJ'd and for years.

You can make great music on nearly anything, as long as you know how to use it.

    - Learn some music theory, and the basics of audio engineering.
Theory first. A shit song will still be awful with all the latest and greatest patches and cool synths.

But you can make an awesome song by repeating (nearly) the same loop for 5 minutes if done well.

    - Buy a decent sound card + a controller keyboard if you can spare the $.
But, finish at least 1 song before doing so, to make sure you're serious. A lot of people give up early.
    - Read the manuals that come with sequencers. And watch tute videos.
    - Then get some decent headphones and speakers. Sennheiser headphones.
Alesis, Yamaha, and Behringer all make budget monitors that sound good.
If too exxy, l ogitech's thx-whatever speakers are surprisingly good for the price.
    - Buy or pirate Computer music magazine, and sound on sound once you start lusting after expensive hardware.
    - Get some loop packs and assemble tracks using them to start. It'll be easier than composing a song that's listenable.
    - Learn how synths work, so you ca make sounds you want rather than preset hunting.
    - Shops like this will become a real danger to your bank balance. I live really close to the one below, and it's an effort not to
buy things whenever I'm bored :D Music Gear/Hardware shops will become a menace to your bank balance.

Don't go crazy getting every VST and synth you find and never making songs. Get a decent studio going and then bang out tunes for a while until you understand what you want and why.

Software Suggestions ( Pick 1 and learn how to use it)

    >> FL Studio Will get you started, and is easy to get going with. Has synths and drums.
    Start with it.

    - Reason. It's all in one. And that's a good thing.
    - Ableton live
    - Everything native instruments make.

    Synths
( my taste is a bit out of date)
    - Fruity, Reason and Live all come with reasonable synths out of the box. Live has the weakest of the three.
    - My favourite VST synths is still the REFX Vanguard. It's strong for leads and arps, and bass with processing.
    - Refx Nexus is a good one. You can get lots of sample packs for it.
    - Anything korg make, hardware or software

    Loop / Sample packs.
I was never into sample packs/libraries, except for drums, so just DL some and play.

    PS.
Psytance bass is like this. Simpler than many guess. You can do it with LFO's if you're game, but KISS.

Damn, want to make some tunes now myself.

VST's is what I understand is going to be a big part of your trick to getting into films on the music side as a composer. I'm more on the filming side of things, so I'm only slightly aware of the composing side of it.

Get some samples of your work and then volunteer for a few films/shorts. When you're at that point to volunteer, I'll help point you in the right direction where you can volunteer your services for free and get your name out there more.

    Good luck!

Oh, and AudioNews (though their registration system seems to be bugged out for the last few months) and ProAudioTorrents are the torrent sites to look at as far as I know. There's a small selection at Theshow.bz, which has open registrations for the moment.

    I listened to it.
It' ok, for what it is.... ie learning how to make a sound and sequence it.
It lacks a narrative though. Tread a song like movie with characters you introduce and acts you move through.
    Intro, middle, conclusion.

It lacks cadence and melody though. So here's something to read.

    - make some songs in A minor and C major. They're easy scales to work with.

make_music, what.cd is the best source of lossless music as far as I'm concerned, though I'm sure some people will tell you other sites are better. You can get an invite to what.cd if you become VIP tier 3, which you can do a number of ways -- you can pay to be tier 3 right now, or you can work your way up to 55% and pay to be Tier1 and automatically get upgraded to tier3, or you can just be an awesome member of the TI community for like...a year and get upgraded to VIP for free. I took the 55% route.
