Thread: My First Blunder, what's yours?

Hi all, I am new here and fairly new to the torrenting world. I have only been around for almost 3 months now and my first tracker was IPT, which is still my favorite. I got up to a sweet 9.?? ratio and figured I was ready for another, afriend gave me an invite to TL.

Well here's my blunder:

I found me a nice 37GB Star wars pack, was great, I was on my downloading way. Ya know, funny thing, not too many people are into downloading packs, hence it was a horrible way to begin my relationship with TL. Really, because I was so new at all of this, I didn't know what I was going to do. I thought I was not only going to get banned, but get my friends account banned as well, I mean, my ratio was at .001 and only 5 days to bring it back up to a .4.



I searched around on the internet, and found this site, it was great, it introduced me to the idea of a seedbox. I will never have a bad ratio again haha. So I got my seedbox, got on TL's IRC ( after only 6 hours of trying to get their chat to admit that no, I really wasn't a bot), and spoke with the staff there. They were great, completely understood (they must deal with noobs a lot), and told me that it was good too see me trying.

Well too make a long story short, I figured out how to cross-seed, in which I am now a professional and got my ratio to well past .4 before my five days were up. :)

Ok, So I am wondering what your worst blunder on a tracker has ever been, don't be shy. :)

No need to feel alone, but your original post was only 28 minutes ago.. so you want to give people a chance to reply ..xD

Most of us made have made a few mistakes along the way, hopefully not large ones.. but no less memorable for that. I remember having a really bad ratio at one tracker until I figured out how to improve it. And asking some silly questions early on, amongst other things. You'll probably get some good replies here, given half a chance. Cheers

For me it was BitMe-TV!! I hate that place now!! lol...even with a seedbox I struggled at that place and I couldn't make my ratio increase, I spoke to the staff and they only let me download 2 torrents max to increase it. I gave up and never logged in again, account is disabled now like so many other ppl on that tracker!!!!

Thank god BTN is the place to be for TV!!!

Odd, I actually posted this last night, and I think in a different section of the forums. Then I posted on it again 2 hours ago. Maybe I am going crazy, haha. :)

Yeah Ash, I have noticed that some trackers seem almost impossible to improve ratios on, there just doesn't seem to be as many leechers on them.

The best thing to do for a tracker like Bit-Me is to wait until a free leech comes along. I racked up 300GB upload in a day during the last free leech.

Same with Waffles and What.cd. ~1TB buffer at each of those trackers just from using a seedbox during a free leech.

Problem is that free leeches at those difficult sites are few and far between.

Without a seedbox most DSL users have it rough. My house connection yields about 2 MB down and 76KB/s up...trying to keep the ratio up was impossible.

Seedboxes really are the way to go.

Edit: Oh yeah, my first blunder. I guess that would be inviting a bunch of people from the 10% section on here to PTM, only to have ~60% of them turn out to be cheaters or traders. Damn near lost my account there over it. Seriously, my invite tree looks like it wintered a rough storm. Those user names had already been banned from here for various reasons, so no retribution was possible.

Amazingly I still have invite privledges there, but there is no way that I would create another GA thread for that tracker.

There are some real scum bags that cycle through our 10% forum. Having lax application requirements there is a dangerous thing.

I have thought about giving some invites out as well, though like you said, I don't want to give them to abusers. Perhaps I will wait till I am 33% or above. Which I have noticed that the same trackers that are in 10% or also in 33%, is that more for the inviters protection than anything else? I would have thought that being more exclusive, they would have had invites for better trackers.

Don't get me wrong, plenty of people have good luck giving away invites in the 10% forum. Just don't set the application requirements too low, and make sure you check out thoroughly who you are inviting.

You'll see the medium and some higher level trackers in the 10% and 33% forum as well as the 55% forum, there are just more of them in the later categories.

Never had a blunder yet ! Fingers crossed. I'm a very cautious little mouse. I give give give give, and then only, when everyone is asleep, I sneak in under the pillow and take the coin I was dreaming of all this time :D

More seriously, it's great sharing these stories so people understand the game is simple: only go to trackers that are in your reach. Give back first: upload or seed like a walking dead - forever. There's no feeling like the feeling of a huge ratio next to one's username :p

My biggest blunder?

Well there are two. When I first began using torrents, back in 2005, I got on a private tracker just when it was starting through some process I don't remember. I downloaded one thing and one thing only. A half hour TV show. When that was done, I kept it seeding for a few days, but it didn't upload anything at all. At that point, there were something like 2000 seeders and about 100 leechers (if memory serves). So I killed the upload. Got banned almost immediately. I have absolutely no idea what the tracker was. It was very long ago and I was 100% noob.

My other blunder is apparently that I've been a steady uploader on all public trackers for the last 6 years. Which I'm told is quite dangerous.

That's why I'm here. Learning the private tracker ropes.
