I'm on 7-8 years right now.. joined my first awesome private in 2005, but did some publics before that.. I haven't paid for any software that wasn't worth it since(but then again i've bought more stuff than I would have if I didn't get to try it first)
i've been doing this for over 7 years... around 2004 is when i got started with Kazaa. I was hooked the first time I could download music on Kazaa and listen to it for free... I can't believe I didn't look into it sooner... as I've heard about Kazaa and Napster but was never really into it.
Well... at first, I paid about $20 for a website that basically listed suprnova's "browsing" directories of the torrents. They basically had their domain but somehow redirected suprnova categories into their website frames. I later found out about this and was like... oh what the hell, I didn't really care about this though.
Yea, it was a long and prosperous journey in the torrent world, and also kazaa. I had a lot of good memories and a lot of fun.
I don't plan on stopping torrenting soon.
BTW, i really think you should edit your poll, i don't think there will be a lot of that much of people voting 3 months.. i would categorize it as under 6 months, under a year... 1 to 2 years, 3, 4, 5 6 7 over 9 years ect...

I have been getting free files since 2003, Though, my introduction wasn't through bittorrent. We had a guy on campus who used something(no idea) to get tons of software, and shared it with everyone. As far as Torrenting...damn, I cannot honestly remember the beginning. Though I am sure that my first client was vuze!!

Wow, I feel ancient after reading the previous posts...o_O
I first started getting free mp3s and 'other' material off the internet prolly before some of you even existed, way back before the millenium, through irc and links straight through sites.
free!?
i own everything i download. the downloads are just backups incase my original copies just disappear.
