I like getting things I can acquire without paying for anything but the internet connection. It also emphasizes on sharing, which is a pretty good thing generally (lol)
Moving to appropriate forum.

Free > Paid. That said, I always support those torrents that I really enjoy by purchasing an original.
1. archiving things. even when I won't use them again :P
2. no dvr and I find out about new shows on the trackers
3. stuff broadcasted in the east coast gets to me faster as I live in California
4. films show up on trackers before I could buy them in a store
5. my client is organised well. better than if I had a bunch of boxes, books, records, etc lying around
why torrents rather than cyberlockers, usenet, ftp, etc?
-it's completely free
-organization
-speeds are usually better depending on what I download
-you can find stuff off torrents you wouldn't elsewhere
--links never die :P hopefully seeds don't either
---you can request people reseed things if its not moving along or reasonably fast
I'll edit if I think of more reasons
because I feel good when downloading everything I need for free of charge![]()
I torrent for many reasons...
- Because I have a son and diapers are more important than spending $10-30 on a movie or $50 for a PC game, LOL.
- See how long I can get away with it.
- And again, it's FREE, FREE, FREE! I don't sell any of it so I don't see an issue.
- I'm extremely busy with work and my 2 year old son so its hard to get out with the girlfriend to go see a movie or to lay around and watch a TV show. So, I rely on these great trackers to be my personal DVR :).
I use it because of the community and the fact that the UI for browsing the collections is easier, all the other options either have a good community and a bad UI or a good UI and a not so great community.
Money is short and I no longer pay for tv and can't pay $20 everytime I wanna go see a movie and I refuse to make label execs wallets fatter. If I'm gonna pay $15-$25 for a cd, I want most of that going to the artist, not the big whigs.
Well for me it started out so I could get stuff for free, but now its more of a hobby that doesn't cost too much.
The costs for me now are; £15/month internet connection, £20/month seedbox, £60/2tb hdd, £175 Popcorn Hour A210, £15 ethernet cable from PC to TV, £more(£200?) for the server that I'm gonna build to store and network all the stuff I download, £some? for cost of power to leave PC on 24/7, and probably more I can't think of right now.
Its not that expensive but its certainly not free. I guess it is cheaper than buying the discs(movies, games, TV shows, music, software) from shops, but then again I wouldn't be buying anywhere near as many as I download now due to costs.
Actually its going to be a bit of a test for torrenting for me soon as I just signed up for Sky+HD for a year. I used to have Sky not plus and not HD. Sounds expensive but it was a good offer that means its only costing me £66 for the year more than I was paying, and that gets me a 500gb DVR thrown in, no set up costs or any extras to pay. Its then £11/month after the first year on top of my current/previous package.
I was looking for an invite to Racing Underground as I like F1 and was unhappy with the speed and consistancy of the F1 races getting to my current trackers, well I can record them all myself soon so I'm holding fire on the RU request. I'll be interested to see how I feel about things on that front, like which is easier to live with versus cost etc.

I started to use torrents mainly because I don't have the money, don't want to spend hundreds of buck for mac os x applications. When I see one episode of a show in TV I could also go on some site and watch it for free, but it's extremely complicated and I hate it to watch an episode without knowing what happened in a pirior one - with torrents I can get full TV packs for free and they are stored on a harddrive so I can watch them again whenever I want - without internet connection. I can also watch the newest movies before they have been released in my country, the only 'downside' is that I have to watch them in English, but that's not a negative point for me. The costs are also very small (seedbox, HDDs) compared to the other options. I nearly forgot one point: it's also a convenient way to get music from, because I hate downloading certain songs - +1 for full albums.
