    Default Private tracker safety

    First official forum post!! Yeahhh!!

My biggest concern recently has been safety. I've been accessing more torrents and always from public trackers like PirateBay and KickAssTorrents. I've been thinking about joining a private tracker called TorrentBits, and now I'm involved here with you guys because I want to eventually stop using public trackers altogether.

The question though is: Are private trackers safe enough to not have to worry about anything?

In my opinion, yes. Presently there really is only an issue with specific torrents being watched by specific anti-piracy organization (particularly certain big music releases and some games such as Call of Duty are good examples of watched torrents). In order to see you as a downloader/uploader of the torrent within a private tracker, they would literally have to get an invite to that tracker. Why would they waste the time getting an invite to a private tracker in order to watch a torrent on a tracker with only a few thousand users when they could go to a public tracker used by countless millions without even registering and see an exponentially higher peer list?

Hi Chandia I'm basically the same as you accept been here a little longer I would say that nothing is completely safe but private torrents are the way to go I would watch out for say demoniod which for reasons I don't understand uses public trackers for some files like new movie releases so you think your safe but your really not I have read in their comments section people claiming to have gotten sease and diciest letters. But again I have to say in my brief experience with private traclers the speeds are much faster and all around better quality of product and service. Hope this helps with your decision.

Demonoid isn't really a private tracker. And it feeds in external torrents from The Pirate Bay and similar trackers.

Completely. Except for Demonoid, and TorrentLeech (Which is basically a .001 chance, but still) you will never get a cease and desist. On the other hand, it would also be wise to check if your ISP sniffs torrent packets, as you can get caught anywhere if they are doing this.

To avoid this - you could set the encrpytion settings of your torrent client to "FORCED." That will encrypt any packets to and from your client, and will make it harder for your ISP to snoop, if you have an ISP that does "snoop." Lol.

If your even more paranoid you could pay 5-7$ a month for a VPN, or paying 15-20$ for a low-end seedbox and just download to the seedbox first, then SFTP or FTPS it to your home computer. :)

This is Bittorrent 101 and I totally agree! Everyone should be doing this.

This is the ideal configuration, you could use something like proXPN for free and/or a seedbox for maximum security.

Honestly, relying on the privateness of a tracker for your security is asking for trouble. I commonly see PeerBlocker dropping packets from known Anti-P2P IP ranges using only private trackers (No, not Demonoid either ;P)
We have a saying in the security/hacking world "There is no security in obscurity".

If you want to be 100% safe, be 100% encrypted.

Edit: In addition to proXPN, here's a list of free VPN services: http://techpp.com/2009/07/09/top-5-free-vpn-clients/. Check out PacketiX.NET VPN, it's a free, seemingly unlimited, uncapped educational/experimental VPN in Japan that lets you set up your own personal "private" virtual VPN node. Cool, huh? I haven't used it yet, but I plan to.
