    Its requires a .edu email address, you have to put in what university your attending.
    How they verify it. I dont know.

    Just go to your local community college and apply for admission you should get your student id and email set-up right away. I don't think you have to sign-up for classes either.

    no need to be .edu email, e.g. i'm in sfu so just use @sfu.ca mail and voila.

    I don't know if one's better than the other, some people have better speeds with one or the other. I think cuteFTP is much more polished since its a commercial product. It also has the advantage of segmented downloading. Where it basically breaks up a large file in to multiple files and simultaneously download them and then recombines them when it finishes. Basically it makes downloading larger files quicker. Filezilla does not support that. I mean it's only 3 bucks and filezilla is free. You should just try them both and see which works for you. I personally prefer cuteFTP.
