Thread: High RPM HDD

Im looking for a high RPM HDD to save my fraps files to.... When im recording I lose many frames and I thought it was because of my system I soon came to learn that my 3.2ghz quad core AMD and my dual SLI 9900 GTs with 4 gigs of 5-5-15 ram were sufficient... it was my 1.5 terrabyte 5200 rpm turtle HDD that was slowing me down. Please help i dont want to spend a fortune... I was looking into a WD velociraptor.... Its a 10k RPM HDD for 140 dollars... only 150gigs i think though....

The Velociraptor is about as fast as you can get besides an SSD which are not cheap. Get the 300GB for $180. It's a lot cheaper per GB since you get double the space for only $30. The best technology is not cheap. I am sure you already knew that.


You would get a nice performance boost with something like a 1TB Samsung F3 7200RPM and a nice cache for under $100(what I use on my quad phenom) but if you want the fastest you need the velociraptors or SSDs which are more expensive. That or you can do RAIDs which I have heard from that you get a nice boost for video related things, but I don't deal with that so I don't know from experience.

Nope, the raptor is no more good for his cost, I have read somewhere he get owned by a 2TB hard drive, but I don't remember which one it is tho ...

I think it was the Caviar black 2TO from WD. And if it isn't enough for you just get a second Caviar black and make a raid0 . With 150gb you will do nothing. For best quality you need to record without any compression ( fullsize ) I remember when i was recording movies on my 19"@1280*1024, I had like 4gb per 1~2m. So imagine on a 24" :laugh:. My HDD was less powerfull than a Caviar Black so you won't have any issue with it IMO :).

The Caviar Black is indeed great. It skipped my mind, but it does not edge out the raptor on every test but for the money and space you get compared to the raptors I would certainly buy it.



If you don't want to spend over $100: Samsung F3 is great
If you don't want to spend over $200: Go with the Caviar black 2TB WD
If you want the absolute fastest for any amount of money: get an SSD



Basically the price chart with the best one in each price range.

The main problem for Fraps is CPU speed. I have a an old 74GB Raptor and my CPU is AMD X3 720 (2,8Ghz). It's "ok" if I fraps at stock CPU speeds, but when I have it at 3,6Ghz Fraps slow down is much less and not evident in some games.

However, I remembered I set my Fraps to save .avis to my secondary Samsung 750GB disk (I store audio/video there and the Raptor is my OS/program/games disk).

Unless your HDD is over 3 years old then it's a slow 5400rpm drive, but in reality their speed is almost almost the same as 7200rpm drives. That's why laptops have 5400 drives mostly (the little extra speed is not worth the extra cost, heat, security).

If I were you I would go for WD Black with eyes closed.Coz of it's Price/Performance Ratio and its great Speeds.And They are Reliable too compare to Seagate .

This is true. The only drives to have ever failed on me have been Seagates. I don't think I will ever buy another one unless I get it at a real bargain price. People say their reliability is just as good, but I don't think so. I have had two drives fail on me out of about 20 that I have used and they were both Seagates. Given, it probably isn't the biggest sample size or most representative of the market, but I give value to experience.

Western Digital is very solid.

rather than go high rpm why not just go SSD? the prices are falling and they will outperform any raptor.
