I've been needing a tool like this for quite some time. I tried hundreds of programs, and most didn't even do their job as described, they could not even search and decide which were duplicates based on file names.
In one of my searches I stumbled upon Hardcoded's dupeGuru Music Edition. I was skeptical at first, as it is Fairware (meaning that they seek to get paid for the hours invested in the program, and everything is logged and properly managed so no one pays more than they have to).
They advertised that their software could detect music file duplicates by filename, ID3 tags and even contents.
I then became more skeptical, but thought of giving the software a try. Why not? Everyone should have at least one chance. So I installed it, and began to search for duplicates in my music. I knew I had thousands, but I wasn't expecting over 8000 duplicates. I started reading the list the program found, to make sure that there weren't any mistakes. But there were mistakes, but something like 2-3% at most. Maybe not even that, I can't remember the exact figures.
I have taken the liberty to post screenshots from their official site:
So basically the software does what they say it does, but you should still scan through the list, make sure it does not delete any unnecessary files.
This software is useful for disorganized people like me, that download everything and say that I'll sort it out later but never do.
They also have a version of the software for normal files, and that is Hardcoded's dupeGuru.
Enjoy!
