With 1080p and 720p HD content becoming more and more prevalent on trackers, movies with lossless audio tracks such as DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD are starting to appear, and making sure you have the correct codecs for playback of these formats is confusing average users.
Now there are 3 main ways of playing files with these lossless HD audio tracks.
1. Purchase a commercial media player that has support for Blu-ray/HD-DVD video and audio formats. Some examples are PowerDVD and Total Media Theater. Though this is not recommended mainly from a monetary aspect but also because of occasional playback issues that are usually encountered playing back x264 content in MKV files, especially in PowerDVD.
2. Easiest and quickest way is just using the latest version of VLC media player, downloadable from here.
Most people like the convenience of VLC but people with lower end PCs do experience slow performance. While other users prefer to use players such as Windows Media Player and Media Player Classic.
3. The most efficient and versatile way, and the way that I personally recommend, is using everyone's old favourite Media Player Classic.
**Unfortunately at this moment in time, no way exists to enable playback of these HD audio formats using Windows Media Player 9/10/11 that comes preinstalled on Windows PCs.
-Firstly download the latest version of K-lite Mega Codec Pack here.
-Follow the prompts during install, select simple install, keep following the prompts and complete the installation
-Now open Media Player Classic, it was installed with the Codec pack
-Click View -> Options
-Click External Filters
-Click Add Filter and add the following two filters. "Haali Media Splitter" and "ffdshow Audio Decoder".
-Make sure both have their check boxes ticked. Select each filter and set the Haali filter to "Block" in the right hand menu, and set the ffdshow filter to "Prefer" in the same menu.
-Click Apply and Ok
-Open any HD Movie you downloaded with a DTS-HD or TrueHD audio track and they should play without any issues.
**If you wish to configure the audio decoder settings for a customised sound setup, go to Start->Programs->K-lite Codec Pack->Configuration and click the ffdshow Audio Decoder
If you find this useful, I would be super thankful if you added a rep point. Also if you have any ideas on how to improve this little guide, feel free to post in this thread, or send me an email, I am always open to constructive criticism.
