I play perfect 1080p on my hp-311c atom netbook with Media player classic (on windows 7). It works fine over wireless too.
I played around with some settings in order to enable GPU (nvidia) decoding, google "dxva mpc" or i can provide some links if anyone is interested

For some reason i can play 720p releases just fine, but 1080p releases are choppy. No idea why, but my solution is to simply download 720p only. The quality suffice :)

ok this is a nice guide with screenshots here
The idea is to use Media Player Classic Home Cinema (MPC-HC) to utilize your GPU for HD decoding
in order to do that you must:
    A. Have a graphics card with HD capabilities (my netbook has nvidia ION)
    B. setup MPC-HC according to the guide.
If you don't have A and B, media player is going to use your CPU for decoding, in my case is an Atom which is not capable on its own for HD playback.
Also i don't see why you shouldn't be able to play 1080p smoothly if you got proper GPU and setup MPC properly

I use VLC Media Player and set deinterlace to blend and it plays 1080p fine.

last time i dealt with playing HD on my Atom, VLC did not support GPU assisted playback, don't know if that has changed now.
I am quite happy with MPC with DXVA for my netbook. If processor is good enough it's just a matter of personal taste on which software to use

Just for info i purchased an ACER REVO with the ATOM processor and NVIDIA ION graphics card.... I tried all sorts of guides under Windwows (Win 7 | XP) but could never get all 1080p with DTS to run smoothly in BOXEE | XBMC or MEDIAPORTAL. I then tried with Linux and XBMC, it was much better but still not brilliant.

Then decided to sell the ACER and build my own HTPC running Win 7 and XBMC with the Neon skin..... an absolute dream... the PC isn't anything special | graphics card around £50 but the whole setup now is amazing.

If you haven't played with XBMC recently, give it a bash

    :D

cool redrobin thanks for the info, i tried XBMC in the past but the interface wasn't very smooth. I have win7 anyway but use media center connected with TV for playback but XBMC looks so great, i'll try it sometime soon

i guess it must be the codec probably, and that must be what make some video to be played very choppy
