    Default No IP Logging Vote!

As you know web servers and this forum script vbulletin collects your ips for fun.

While it is useful for catching dupe users...

I believe logging your ips poses more of a security risk than the benefits.

Now I do warn you before you vote... Some capacity of keeping the traders/scammers out will be diminished.

I however believe the good outweighs the bad enough to bring it to a community vote.

If it is successful ip logging will be disabled for the server and vbulletin.

*edit* Looking at the comments below...

Heres an explanation. IP logging stops those that are a little less bothered and a little less tech savvy. It does not stop a determined user.

Those that are not that tech savvy are usually caught by our other method anyway.

The number of bans that we have due to a direct ip trace is significantly less than other methods.

*edit number 2 * seems like removing ip logging is a bit more difficult than i thought it would be. It is like ingrained into this script XD So perhaps this vote is a bit superficial.
I do retain the power to ban you even though i am retired. PM me at your own peril.

Eh Im against this. Way too many dupers and idiots will infiltrate. I'm firmly against this Dave, and the people that are for it will want it because they are planning to dupe.

I can see the arguments for both sides.
Is there anyway we could have the best of both worlds?
Possibly having IPs logged but encrypted? That way the encrypted logs could be used to catch dupers.

I'm strongly against this. Banned users will come back and wreak havoc again to our well established community.

I voted for "keep it on". It is a must have utility for site like torrent-invite to catch dupe accounts. lot of sites including trackers, store user ip whats wrong with torrent-invites's storing.

Well, I am pretty new here so my opinion isn't much. But I voted to keep it on.

Aside from the obvious issues you would face with traders/sellers....etc, disabling your IP logs is bad security in other fashions. Not being able to detect infiltrations and/or security breaches. Rogue administrator could wreak havoc with no trace...etc.

I understand fears you might have. And if you ever had your logs get into, lets say "concerned" hands there could be far reaching consequences. But disabling a primary DB security feature doesn't seem like a good bet.

Let's face it, anyone here with any knowledge of how things go knows the risk of the site. I know I weighed heavily for a long time on deciding to come here and get involved. But I did, so if the hammers ever came out because of an exposed IP log I would have no one to blame but me. (And then go proxy)

Thanks for your concern for your members, Dave. I still say no though.

I am very, very strongly against doing away with IP logging. There would be no other way to determine whether or not some douche has been banned, and then just created a new account right after. There would be absolutely no way of knowing. And I for one do not want to worry about giving invites out to someone who "looks" promising when in fact he has been banned, maybe even multiple times, before. That not only hurts this particular community, but will start to see issues with the members here giving out invites due to the fact that they either do not trust the users, or perhaps the users they ended up inviting cheated etc. on their account and got the inviters invite privileges taken away. So yeah, I was kinda rambling through that to post quickly so I hope it makes sense. But yeah, I'm definitely all for IP logging.

What country are the T-I servers located in? GeoIP says they're just outside of Fort Worth, Texas in the US, is that accurate? What level of information requests to the host can be executed without your say so?

Dave, I appreciate your good intentions and concern for T-I's members, but I believe the potential increase in dupe accounts and banned traders and cheaters reregistering is far more problematic. Strongly against this.
