Cool How-to: Use one gmail address for every occasion

I recently stumbled upon a great article written by the great site MakeUseOf.com. You can find the article here, but I feel that it does not cover enough "how-to" information, so I've decided that I will fill in the missing pieces. The article can be found here.

Sick of having to use 3-4 different email addresses just to have one spam-free address?

I know I sure did. Using a variety of e-mail services is a pain, let alone trying to get Thunderbird to work with every Web-based email service. (rot in hell, Hotmail)

Instead - we can use the same gmail address for everything. Let's say that our address is SuperLeechNoob (at) gmail (dot) com. This is a fake address as far as I know.

Now, let's say that you do some online shopping, and you want all of your orders to appear under 1 kind of tag. So you could use this varient: Super.LeechNoob (at) blahblahblah...

Then, let's say that you like to play MafiaWars on MySpace, and you just don't have enough friends that play so you have to buy extra mafia members. In order to get the points, you choose to do the surveys - those surveys riddle your mailbox with spam - but Google can instantly-archive it; or better yet, instantly delete anything that doesn't have a certain word, like "activate" or "activation code", or the like. Or you can instantly delete anything with the word "free" in it. --- Let's say that you want this to be sent to SuperLeech.Noob (at) blahblahblah...

And now, since we're all part of this wonderful system and will all hopefully get invites to other great private trackers - we'll need to keep track of certain forum posts and the like - so have all of your important torrent stuff sent to Super.Leech.Noob (at) blahblahblah..

So now we have our scenarios - let's take a look at how to use filters for our newly appointed addresses:

  • Near the top of your page, next to the mail search box - there will be in tiny print "Create a filter". Click that.
  • Click "Create new filter"
  • Now you have your fields open. For our online shopping orders, we put in our [TO:] field "Super.LeechNoob (at) blah... , then click NEXT
  • These boxes are pretty self-explanatory - but for the sake of example, you could STAR them, and APPLY THE LABEL : Shopping Orders. (Quick note: lots of online sites like to send you newsletters about stupid spam - you can make another filter on the same address to block out a certain word they use for every spam message - or simply only allow the ones that have the words "Your order has shipped" or "tracking number"). The same kinds of combinations apply to the other above scenarios, and you can tweak the filters after you make them - and the best part is they are retroactive in their filtering, meaning old mail will also be filtered.
Have fun only having to manage one e-mail account forever now!
