What is Steamgifts.com ?

Steamgifts is a website with a sort of rewards system similar to Lockerz, but it specialized in gifts, on well, uh Steam of course. Created by Bay12Games (Dwarf Fortress) (IIRC) it uses a sort of raffle system, which people can enter into raffles using a points system, which points are earned for activity. The points system works on a "1 point = 1 dollar" system. When entering into a raffle the user puts in the equivalent amount of points to the price, and at the end of the time the gift is sent to the email of the random winner.

Is it safe to register (i.e will my account be stolen?)

No, Steamgifts.com utilizes the Steam's openID meaning you login via the Steampowered.com site and sends some basic information about your account to Steamgifts.com - your username/password is perfectly safe.

The reason you need an invite is because it's currently closed registration - meaning you need an invite to use it's services (like google+)
